2.n. 守備的な理由から選手を移動させるプレーで、「the shift is on （シフトを敷く）」と表すことが多く、大抵は打者が打球を飛ばす傾向がある位置に野手を移動させることでなされる。まれに、ある極端なシフト守備が、その名称にシフト対象になる選手の名を冠することがある。例えば「Williams shift（ウィリアムズ・シフト）」はテッド・ウィリアムズを止めるためのシフトの名称に使われた。
